…and the Islam lives.

Because from what I see these days, to ensure that the “Islam” survives in Malaysia and be devoid of its racial connotations that some people associate it with (such as the silly idea that anyone who reverts to Islam and is not a Malay ethnically has “masuk Melayu”), anything in the “Melayu” rhetoric that is against the spirit of Islam and tantamount to assabiyyah must die. Its as simple as that. No need to shout slogans of “Hidup Melayu” and march down the street when the majority of drug addicts are Muslim (Malays), the apostates from Islam are (in the Malaysian context) from the Malay ethnic group, and those who are corrupt are mostly Muslims (Malays).

There’s nothing to be proud of by being a “Malay”. I’ve sponged my heart from such rhetoric years ago. The Malay Basin achieved its height of economic and military power in the 13th century not because they are “Malay”, but because they hold on to Islam. Only Islam can save us. I just hope the sane leaders will realise this before its too late.

[Oh, by the way, I’m not even a “Melayu” ethnically. My father is ethnically a Javanese.]
